Urban Oasis: A Tranquil Retreat in the Heart of the City

Creating a Spacious and Serene Duplex

The original layout of the duplex was composed of numerous bedrooms, serving as accommodation for employees of a company. This layout made the space feel cramped and lacking in natural light. To address these challenges, Vstudio Limited reconfigured the space, creating a large open-plan living and dining area on the lower level.

An open-tread steel staircase was added to penetrate more natural light into the foyer, while the master bedroom was relocated to the upper level. The master bathroom was strategically placed next to a large window, allowing for maximum light and a sense of spaciousness. A tailor-made basin with a glass partition separates the bathtub area, further maximizing the light and creating a bright and airy closet area.

The design team utilized natural cement flooring, wood, black steel, and lacquered paint to bring the vision to life. The use of these materials, combined with grey walls and indirect lighting, creates an oasis of calmness and tranquility, offering a retreat from the bustling city life.

With a total area of 120 square meters, this duplex offers a spacious and functional living space. The project, which started in December 2014 and was completed in June 2015, took a total of six months from design to construction. Located in Hong Kong, this urban oasis showcases the perfect blend of design and functionality.

Vstudio Limited, led by Vanessa Ng, successfully overcame the challenges of the original layout to create a space that maximizes natural light and offers a serene living environment. The design has been recognized for its excellence, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and innovative characteristics.
